Los Angeles — Where Palm Trees Meet Downtown

Los Angeles is a city of scale that most people only understand after actually spending time there. It is not one city but many — Santa Monica, Downtown, Hollywood, Silver Lake, Venice, Long Beach — all loosely held together by freeways and that famous golden light. The downtown skyline on its own is striking, but what makes LA truly LA is the context: palm trees, the Hollywood Hills, the Pacific in the distance, the Griffith Observatory watching over it all.

Drawing LA means choosing an angle. I do a lot of work around the classic downtown view with the US Bank Tower, the Wilshire Grand, and the Library Tower, but some of my most popular LA pieces focus on the wider frame — the Hollywood sign, the Observatory, the beach and pier. Warm sun-kissed palettes work especially well for this city, as do cooler dusk-and-night colour schemes.
