London — Where History and Hipness Share a Wall

London is one of those cities I find almost impossible to summarise in a single piece — which is probably why I have ended up drawing it from so many different angles over the years. There is the postcard London of Big Ben, the Eye, and the Shard, and then there is the quieter London: a garden square in Bloomsbury, a canal in Hackney, a bench in Hampstead Heath. Both versions are true, and both worth hanging on a wall.

What I love most about drawing London is the layering. A thousand-year-old tower standing beside a glass skyscraper. A black cab passing a Lime bike. The Thames threading past Parliament, the Globe, and Tate Modern in the space of a few minutes. Whenever I am sketching the London skyline, I try to let that contrast come through, whether I am working in a soft pastel palette or a bolder watercolour.
