Houston — Space City, On Your Wall

Houston is a city that does not announce itself the way a Nashville or a New Orleans does — it spreads, it sprawls, it surprises. The skyline only tells half the story. The other half lives in The Heights, Montrose, the Museum District, along Buffalo Bayou, and out at Johnson Space Center where the city earned its nickname. Drawing Houston means recognising both sides — the energy capital with one of the densest downtown skylines in the South, and the most ethnically diverse large city in America, full of food, art, and quiet residential streets.

The skyline is one of the most rewarding in Texas to draw. JPMorgan Chase Tower, the tallest building in the state, anchors the composition; Wells Fargo Plaza, Heritage Plaza, and the Bank of America Center fill it out with real vertical presence. Williams Tower stands apart in Uptown — I sometimes include it as a second skyline node for clients who want their Galleria neighbourhood represented. Houston suits warmer palettes: burnt orange, deep red, sunset gold — the colours of a Texas evening — though cleaner blues and steel-grey schemes work beautifully for a more corporate or modern interior.
